Treating Cystic Acne

The Pain of Pimples

Acne boils are localized infections deep in the skin caused by bacterial infection which enters the body through hair follicles.  The offending bacterium is called staphylococcus aureus and is commonly found on most people.  Another source of acne boils is plugged sweat glands which become infected. Once the follicles become affected by the bacteria, they become inflamed and red.  Eventually the center of the abscess becomes soft and can be drained.  Acne is not only physically painful and bothersome, it also has the potential to create pain emotionally as the person suffering with it can be embarrassed by the appearance of pimples on the skin - especially if they're cystic acne.

Treat Acne At Home

It is possible to treat acne at home and with patience and consistency, it can be treated very effectively.

There has been much written about the effect of diet on the skin and plenty of research has been done to corroborate the connection between the two.  It's no secret that the foods recommended to be abstained from are also implicated in myriad other maladies.  Foods with high sugar content, dairy (cheese, milk, butter) and foods containing trans fats (these would include most fast foods and snack foods) are all allergens for people with acne. Avoiding consumption of these three categories of foods and upping your intake of fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains and lean meats can help immensely to heal acne.  Fresh fruit and vegetables act as cleansing agents helping to remove toxins which create inflammation and infection.

Stress seems to bring a lot out in people - and for acne sufferers, it tends to increase the outbreaks.  Engaging in some mind/body types of exercises such as yoga, tai chi or even some deep breathing exercises can relieve stress which, in turn, helps to clear the skin.  Pick one to begin with and do some exercise often - daily is best.

Keeping the skin clean almost goes without saying.  Using a gentle, natural soap and clean face cloth and towel daily keeps the oil from clogging the pores and removes dirt which can cause infection if it gets into an open follicle.

Wash your skin from the inside out by drinking 8 to 10 glasses of purified water per day.  Water is necessary for many bodily functions and enhances clarity of the skin as it moves impurities from the body.

When You Need Professional Help

If you are dealing with an extreme case of acne, or the acne has become cystic and painful, it is best to see a dermatologist. The dermatologist can do an examination and determine a course of treatment which may include a change of diet, skin care regimen and perhaps prescription medicines to bring the acne under control.  There are many methods available to aid in healing this type of boil outbreak.
